Halloween is a time for plenty of entertainment and excitement for the kids. However, always put the safety of your kids first. Do not send your younger children off trick or treating all by themselves. Remember that the neighborhoods are not as safe as they were once upon a time. As a result, its very important that they are under adult supervision or are at least in the care of a responsible older child while out.
1. Explain to your kids the importance of them staying on side walks, not cutting through back alleys, dark streets, or fields. Be sure they know and understand that it is a safer for them to be in well lit areas and places that have people around.
2. Its particularly important that you dont forget to set all jack-o-lanterns with candles in them, out of the reach of your children. You dont want to have any incidents of your kids Halloween costumes accidentally being set on fire.
3. When pumpkin carving with your kids, dont leave sharp knives lying around and never allow your kids to use any sharp knives. Its much better and safer for you to do all the carving for them and only let the kids clean out the pumpkins and draw faces on, which they want you to carve for them.
4. Ensure that your childrens Halloween costumes fit them properly. Avoid getting them big, baggy, loose costumes or over sized shoes. This will help them to get around with no trouble without the danger of tripping and hurting themselves.
5. When picking your childrens Halloween costumes keep in mind that costumes that come with props such as pitchforks, swords, butcher knives, wands, can easily cause accidental eye, face, and head injuries, so always make sure that these props are made out of a flexible material.
6. Always make sure your kids Halloween costumes are flame resistant and make sure that their costumes are bright colored so that they will be visible to drivers. If you choose dark spooky costumes, you can always decorate the outside of the costume with strips of reflective tape.
7. When selecting Halloween costumes for younger kids make sure the costumes dont have choking hazards such as buttons, beads or any other small accessories that can be swallowed by the younger one.
8. Its very important that you have your childrens names and addresses attached to their costumes, for identification purposes in case of any accident.
9. Set a time at which you expect your kids to be home and make sure you make it clear to them the importance of them getting home on time.
