My father always said you learn something new every day and this applied when I got my first real job. According to him we had some details to sort out. I wanted to do everything my self but I definitely needed him to guide me. I did not realize it at the time but he would be right. One of the things his infinite wisdom shared with me was that now that I got a job how was I going to use and budget the money. One of the criteria on his list was paying for health insurance. I was old enough now that I was no longer going to be covered on my parent’s policy and when I found out how much they paid I was certain that I was going to wait before I purchased it. I had more important things to spend my money on.Well we discovered that my employer had a really inexpensive plan that according to my dad was sufficient coverage. The plan covered all visits to the doctors, dentist and all prescriptions and this was paid with a co payment at the time of need and that was only $15.00. Not to shabby when you consider that a doctor’s visit for something a common as the flu could put you out $125.00 including medicine, not to mention the follow up visit. It also covered me from any major illnesses and emergency hospital needs. Any of that was under a deductible of $2500.00, this kept my monthly payment low that was conveniently taken out of my check every two weeks.Health insurance really never seemed like a big priority for me. I needed spending money for my weekend trips with my friends, important stuff like skiing, hiking and canoeing. I knew dad’s advice was solid so I made sure it. I honestly considered canceling it, none of my friends had it but then again most of them did not have a job. I was young, strong and in great health, what a good waist of money. On one of my absolutely necessary canoe trips as we returning to the boat ramp I was severely bitten by a rattle snake. It did not look like I was going to make it but here I am today alive and kicking. I would like to add my tab up for. A helicopter ride, ten days in intensive care, five days in recovery and a boat load of prescriptions I got when the infection started up. That added another 5 days of follow up visits. This would cost me the rest of my life if I was not covered. For a measly few dollars a month a life time of security. Dad was right!
